To avoid unwelcome surprises, be prepared
When taking on a long cycle route like Mjøstråkk, preparation is key. Carefully consider how far you are able to ride each day, and where to spend the night. What constitutes a suitable leg will depend on how much gear you bring, the type of surface you are riding on, the number of climbs, and if there is a risk of headwind.
According to experienced cyclists, a suitable daily leg for a person in good physical condition but with limited cycling experience is 30 - 45 kilometres. If you are in excellent shape, the daily stretch can be increased to 70 – 90 kilometres.
A good place to start the planning process is to make sure that you know your bike and are aware of your own limits. Ask yourself the following questions:
- What type of terrain is your bike is intended for?
- For example, is it suitable for gravel roads?
- How far are you able to cycle without carrying any gear?
Furthermore, it is important to consider the purpose of the trip. Is it a leisurely ride where you enjoy attractions along the way, or is it more of a training session? If your intention is to explore, it is important to allocate enough time.
Packing list
It is always advisable to bring some basic kit, even for a day trip. Use a small backpack or bicycle bag. Everything you can carry on your bike will feel a lot less heavy than carrying the same weight on your back. It is also a good idea to carry a small handlebar bag with a clear plastic pouch for map and route description.
Pack everything in waterproof bags to avoid uncomfortable surprises. Remember to bring a small tool set, puncture repair kit, pump, and a good bike lock. We also recommend using a high-visibility vest when on the go.
Weather and clothing
The weather is often unstable and can change surprisingly fast – from warm and sunny to cold, wet and windy. Bring good gloves, a hat or buff to wear under your helmet, and preferably overshoes. Something warm to wear in the evenings and during night is recommended – but also remember to bring swimming gear.
A good tip is to roll your clothes instead or folding them as they then take up less space. If placed upright in the backpack or bag, you get a quick overview of what is there without having to unpack.
